Assumption Life

NEW BRUNSWICK -

A new partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and Assumption Life will help teach New Brunswick school children about sun safety.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s SunSense program supports schools in creating sun safe environments for staff and students through education and awareness. The program targets children in grades 1-5, who, on average, spend one to three hours per day outdoors for recess, lunch, gym, school trips and extracurricular activities.

“It is estimated that 80% of an individual’s lifetime exposure to the sun occurs before the age of 18, and research indicates childhood exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is an important contributing factor to the development of skin cancer later in life,” said Anne McTiernan-Gamble, Executive Director of the Canadian Cancer Society in New Brunswick. “We are deeply grateful to Assumption Life for supporting a program that will help prevent cancer in New Brunswick.”

One in seven Canadians are diagnosed with skin cancer. Although highly preventable, it is the most common type of cancer and it is on the rise. For this reason, it is important to establish healthy behaviours during childhood that are more likely to persist into adulthood.

Founded in 1903, Assumption Life offers individual and group insurance products, investment, and retirement products as well as mortgages. It conducts business in all Canadian provinces and territories. The company's head office is located in Moncton, New Brunswick.

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer. Thanks to our donors and volunteers, the Society has the most impact, against the most cancers, in the most communities in Canada. Building on our progress, we are working with Canadians to change cancer forever. For more information, visit cancer.ca or call our toll-free bilingual Cancer Information Service at 1-888-939-3333.
